Hug a Tree and Kiss a Sparrow
SATB, djembe | 3' 30"
This timely work with a heartfelt text by poet Kim Baker reflects on the effects of climate change on the earth and claims "love will save us" in the triumphant conclusion. The "hoo" of the owl is woven throughout as an accompaniment and response. Fun syncopations, a djembe part, and even body percussion make this an engaging work for choirs and audiences to enjoy.

Mother Earth,
we grieve with you.
Who will come to our rescue?
Who will save us?
Who will save us?
Raise our voices!
Sing the sorrow!
Plant the seeds
of our tomorrow!
Daughter bears and sister bees,
canopies of cedar trees,
your gifts are dying out with you.
Who will save us?
Who will save us?
Raise our voices!
Sing the sorrow!
Plant the seeds
of our tomorrow!
Mountains pillaged, oceans ravaged.
Climate change like raging rapids.
High aloft, hoot owl laments.
Who-hoo-hoo will save us?
Who-hoo-hoo will save us?
Raise our voices!
Sing the sorrow!
Plant the seeds
of our tomorrow!
What’s been done, can we undo?
Come together to renew?
Cherish each and every creature?
Can we save them?
Can we save us?
Raise our voices!
Sing the sorrow!
Plant the seeds
of our tomorrow!
Hug a tree and kiss a sparrow!
Love each being to the marrow!
Love will save us!
Love will save us!
Save our Mother, children, selves!
